I was expecting angels to greet me at the door when looking into this place. It reminded me of one those scenes in a movie that depicts heaven (Grease comes to mind)…it’s very white, bright, pure, clean…a lot of perfection!! It definitely has a different vibe to most other cafe’s around town. From the chairs & tables upstairs, bar/counter, walls, staircase…it’s all so white, except for the coffee machine which is chrome, but then….well…that just reflects the white. You certainly get a bright, pure and clean feel when hanging out in this place.
What actually got me into Option Coffee Bar was a post I saw on Facebook of their food, it looked pretty amazing, especially their beef and noodle dish…that’s the photo that grabbed me. There were also some pics of awesome toasted sandwiches, and these seem to be a bit of a hit as I saw a number of people ordering them….Strangely enough though, I’ve still not yet tried the food here, I come mainly for the coffee…which is up there with the best.
At 90 baht for a coffee, you’ve hit Bangkok prices, and although being in Udon Thani, the place does make you feel like you’re in Bangkok (at least for the time you’re in the pearly gates). The decor, design, quality of coffee, quality of food…it really is above average and much like you’d find in a quality cafe in Thong Lo or Ekkamai. It’s unique and brave! Dishes coming out of the kitchen that you’re most likely only gonna see here…so I won’t complain about the prices here. They’ve stepped out of the box and come up with their own “thing”. Nice work!
The place is made of two floors, the ground floor which has the main bar/counter area, and around 4 tables seating aprox 8-10 people (10 if you want to squish up close to your friends :-)). Then you have the second floor which has more seating options including a bench with stools that look over the first/groundf floor. The spiral staircase leading up to the second floor is kinda cool, although it is a little tight, so perhaps watch your step as I’ve heard a few people have a little stumble on their way up…quite funny actually 🙂
So back to the quality of coffee, as this is why I come to this cafe (for now anyway). When looking at the selection of coffee on the menu and the prices alongside, I was initially a little shocked…as they really are all around 90 baht which is quite a hike up from most other cafes around here. But don’t let this put you off, at the end of the day it is only 90 baht, and you’d pay this in Bangkok anyway, so it’s definitely worth the try. OK, if you’re not a coffee lover, maybe you’re happy just to find another local cafe selling 35 baht coffees with Tesco quality beans….but if you love a bangin coffee, then definitely give these guys a try. They would definitely be up the top of my list for good coffee’s in Udon Thani, and when you combine this with the quality and uniqueness of the food options here (not to forget the vibe and ambiance of the place as well), it could just be one of the best cafe’s around town…but I can’t comment on the food yet as I haven’t tried it.
One other thing I’ll mention that makes this place great, is that it’s out of the main touristy area, so you get a very local feel about the place…don’t expect to see a heap of foreigners in here!
Anyway, definitely a place worth checking out. Take a look at the photos below too where I have some snaps of the menu and prices as well.
I don’t take credit for the food photos as these are photos of their menu.
What are the prices like?
฿90 for a cappucino. Around ฿130 for a quality toatsed sandwich and around ฿200 for their more specialty dishes. Not bad right?
