Thought Walking In
DAT WICH looked very tasty from the outside with bright large banners of burgers, wraps and sandwiches – I knew this place would eventually pull me in! So they got me in the door, and first impression was that it seemed like a boutique style McDonalds (if that even exists) as they had the large menu board up above the counter and a simple spacious layout inside. Instantly looking at the board I could see at least 5 things I could eat straight away – and then the lady hands me a proper menu (shown in the image gallery below) to have a better look. They had a huge range of food from wraps, quesadillas, burgers, eggs on toast, english muffins (with all sorts of fillings), bagels, french fries…too much to go on!
DAT WICH had a range of coffee’s and tea’s to choose from as well. On the shelves I could see Akha Ama coffee beans for sale which I haven’t seen yet in a cafe in Bangkok! (Akha Ama are based in Chiang Mai and produce some top quality beans and amazing coffee from their cafe’s). I was sold! I was settling down here for the morning!
Awesome food but disappointing with the coffee. I probably wouldn’t have been so disappointing had I not seen the Akha Ama beans (seeing those made me think these guys were gonna do a quality coffee – I probably would have expected a more American diner style coffee had I not seen these).
The table layout was pretty good for either sitting by the window watching the world go by, sitting outside in the outdoor seating area or choosing one of the large table located in the center of the cafe which can seat a good 6-8 people or be used for sharing with other randoms. I chose the larger table because I was setting up the laptop (as always) and catching up on some emails. Seats and tables are wooden – so no soft cushioning for your butt! But I was pretty comfy sitting there for a good hour or so.
I ordered the Chicken Fin English Muffin which was filled with egg, cheese, carrot, chicken and mustard. Within 5 minutes of sitting down my meal was there! Presentation was good both the actual food and the large wooden spoon type cutting board it was served on. The taste was awesome too! In fact check out the menu, one thing I noticed with these guys was they had a lot of common dishes but with a bit of twist – but a twist that seems like it works…all the meals sound/look great!
Next I had to try out the coffee – and it just goes to shoe good beans doesn’t mean good coffee! In fact if it weren’t for the beans, I probably would have left the coffee but the quality beans did give it a nice flavor and made it drinkable. I ordered the Latte and it came out looking pretty much an instant coffee – about 0.5 of millimeter of foam and tasted more like a plunger/french press coffee than a milky latte. But hey, it gave me my caffeine fix and if I were having breakfast or brunch here again, I might just order it again (if I couldn’t be bothered hopping to another cafe for a latte).
What I Will Remember
The common dishes with a twist – loved it! Everything you’ve seen before – but different!
Will I Go Back?
Yeah I’ll be back, probably a few more times. There’s a few things I want to try on their menu. The Hamburger, Quesadillas, Tabasco Shrimp Ciabatta and Eggs Benedict!
DAT WICH 64 Sukhumvit 55 (Thonglor) Khlong Tan Nuea Bangkok – About 300 meters on the right on soi 55 (Thonglor) coming from Thonglor BTS station.
Pretty easy place to find and not too far from the BTS. Take the BTS to Thonglor and head up soi 55 (Thonglor) and it’s about 300 meters on your right. The signage is pretty clear so it’s easy to spot.
Well priced for this area – food is between about 150-250 Baht and goes a bit higher for the heavy baguettes and burgers (around 280) and lower for some of the side dishes/starters (French Fries etc.).
You can check out their Facebook page here.
Wifi worked well, I wasn’t doing any heavy downloads but it was uninterrupted and fast for the work I was doing.
What to Expect
Creative and quality sandwiches, bagels, baguettes and burgers!
