The Brick House Inn probably needs no introduction. Even for the first time tourists in Udon Thani, you’ll most likely be passing by this place if you’re visiting the touristy areas.

This bar/restaurant/cafe sits on Samphan Thamit Alley one of the most popular streets for bars, hotels and restaurants (for foreigners anyway), so if you’re looking for a western meal, western style accomodation, or a lively bar to hang out at, you’ll probably end up here at some stage!

The Brick House Inn stands out amongst the other places along this street, well it does for me anyway. It drew me in on my first walk down this street, there’s something about the style of the place that make it really inviting. It could be the stained glass used around the place, the open vintage wooden windows, or just the fact that it’s all opened up so you can can see everyone happily eating/drinking away, but it’s got character and liveliness to it, and it’s always got a decent crowd in there.

It’s definitely got a vintage type feel to it, a very brick/wooden look (very “puby”), and the bar area adds that extra touch. The bar is also pretty inviting, maybe it’s the booze sitting behind the counter, or the huge selection of craft beers on offer, but it’s got a very traditional style to it (wooden bench, wooden stools), and then modern lighting above and below it which really lights it up, and with the range of drinks these guys have on their menu, so they should be putting focus on the bar! I’ll come back to the drinks in a bit.

The front area of this place is is all opened up, in fact the whole place is actually – I don’t think there’s air-con here, as the windows/doors are always open letting the fresh breeze pass though. The front area is one of the more popular spots for people during the day, it seems to be where most people sit to drink or eat, and it also has a lot of dining space. It’s all under cover, so if it’s raining you’ll stay dry, and if it’s hot, you’ll stay cool in the shade…great little spot!

The indoor (center) area has some more tables and chairs scattered around the place, but the bar is the feature in this zone. There’s a good space around the bar, probably 7-8 stools around the bar, but could have 10 or or me people standing.

Behind the bar you’ve got a pool table and darts board – and they’ve given this area it’s own space, so you don’t have to worry about interupting people sitting down while taking a shot a pool, as it’s clear from all the dining area. For thos who love a game of pool, the table here’s pretty good too, balls roll really well (fast) on it, and it’s a decent size too. It uses the proper billiard style pockets though so it’s a little more difficult to sink the balls in.

Then there’s the back area of the place – another great little feature of this pub. It’s a small outdoor courtyard with a garden and a few tables. This is a nice spot in the afternoon as well, as it’s well shaded and feel very “fresh”.

This place has it all, I mean ALL! Let me just list a few things that you might like about this place.

  • Breakfast (and coffee) – all the popular breakfasts to choose from including an Eggs Benedict (my fav)
  • Western Food – A LOT of it, and quality too. I can remember the whole menu, but here’s a huge range to choose from here.
  • Thai Food – Again, not sure how many Thai dishes they have, but my girlfriend had a phad krapow moo and tasted great!
  • Large dining area – A heap of dining options – front outside area, inside are, bar area, back area.
  • Bar area – Well every bar has a bar area I guess, but this bar is a true pub bar, much like an Irish pub.
  • Pool Table
  • Craft beer, local beer, wine, cider…The selection is huge, a whole 2-3 pages just on beers and ciders. They’ve also got San Miguel light here on tap (which is soemthing different), and the prices a pretty reasonable. One drink I found quite impressive (price wise) was the Hoegarden Rose – 125 baht fo a half pint.
  • Outdoor courtyard
  • Sports/TV

I think that’s about it, but you probably get the idea.

So back to food menu! You can get everything from Burgers, steaks, breakfasts (American, Eggs beendict…and more), Mexican…I didn’t get through the whole menu before choosing my breakfast, but I doubt there won’t be something you can’t find on the menu. I haven’t tried one of their burgers, but I’ve heard they’re one of the bets in town, so if you’re a burger fan, this place is probably a good bet!

I would normally order an Eggs Bendict from anywhere serving it up on the menu, but I’d had one the day before so figured I’d go for Club Sandwich. The club was huge, and tasted delicious. This club stood out among outher clubs as there was a strong tasting quality cheese used (cheddar I think) instead of the stock standard 7/11 cheese slices. The rest of the ingredients seemed really fresh as well, and they didn’t skimp on ingredients – good amount of chicked, egg, salad and serving of thick cut fries. As long as chips are crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, I’ll be pretty happy. But these chips where the thick cut fries….and normally I don’t like these as they tend to not be cooked all the way through, so they’re a little tough in the center. These were done really well, and had the crunchy outside and soft center that I love.

The drinks menu might leave you sitting there deciding what to order for 5-10 minutes, there’s so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide which one to order. I had a San Miguel Light, a Red Wine, Little Creatures IPA and sip or 4 of my girlfriends Hoegarden Rose. The craft beers aren’t cheap, but that’s just normal here – the price was the same you’d pay at any other place selling craft beer. I think the crafty’s started at around 225 baht and went up from there. Actually my Little Creatures may have been one of the rare cheaper options and around 195…anyway…much the same.

Look….if you’re in Udon Thani and not sure of places to go – I think this is a must, you’ll be sure to find something you like whether it be food or drink here, and it’s a really nice place to sit and relax as well. You’re in a great spot as well, cause you can always pop into one of the many other bars before or after your visit here, as well as Central Plaza and UD Town both 5 minutes walk.

What were the main things you liked about the place?

  • The bar – just the style of it…I like it.
  • Entertainment. They’ve got sports on the TV’s, a pool table, and darts, so a good choice of entertainment.
  • The variety of food and drinks – so much to choose from for any time of day, and I always love a place with craft beers on the menu.
  • The location – it’s on the main bar street, but also only 5 minutes walk to Central Plaza and UD Town

What are the prices like?

Around ฿200 (average) for a meal here. Some breakys are around ฿160, and as you go up to your more substantial / larger meals, they go above the ฿200. Beers are well priced here, particularly if you’re getting one on tap, From memory they have San Miguel light on tap for ฿90 a glass (half pint). The craft beers start around ฿225 and go up.

Where are they located?

It’s the main touristy road that has a lot of the bars and hotels and runs alongside the Central Plaza.
