A taste of Italy with my Eggs on Toast this morning – a recipe I’ve never tried before, but sounded very interesting!
I was walking the main beach road through Ao Nang and checking the menu’s of the cafe’s for a good breaky. There was quite a lot on offer, and all the popular one’s I was looking for, like egg benedict, american breakfast, eggs on toast (any style). There certainly wasn’t a lack of good breakfasts around here, but when I read the menu of A-One Restaurant, a particular dish stood out that made me stop and have to try.
It’s actually a variation of one of my favourites, the Eggs Benedict, however think of the hollandaise sauce swapped with pesto, and the ham/bacon swapped with Italian Parma ham, and the base was a homemade English muffin. I love my Italian food, and love a good Eggs Benedict, and so I was sold just on this one dish.
The restaurant itself seems to be quite popular in the area, as often when passing by of an evening, there always seems to be a good crowd, and it occupies a nice large space of land facing out over the beach, with both and undercover (partly indoor area) and a large outdoor area as well. The place would have to seat around 80 people or so, it’s really got a lot of space. However this “passing by” was always of an evening, so wasn’t so sure how these guys would cater for the morning people.
A-One is more a restaurant than a cafe, however they do have the all day breakfasts and server coffee – it’s just not the cozy cafe you might be looking for if you wanted to chill and read a book or your laptop for an hour or so – it’s definitely more of a restaurant than anything else – hence the name “A-One Restaurant”.
So back to my poached eggs with parma ham, pesto sauce, on a homemade english muffin. Well – it was impressive, really impressive! In fact I may just prefer this over an Eggs Benedict or and Eggs Florentine (with salmon), but this could just be because it’s something new and different, but the combination works a treat!
The eggs were cooked to perfect, solid / cooked egg white and runny yoke that dribbles over the muffin and soaks into it adding to the texture. The Parma ham was cooked to be a little crisp, but not too crispy, just on some of the edges. Was good quality parma ham too, strong taste/flavour and worked well with the italian pesto touch as well. The pesto sauce seemed to be home made, not something that comes out of the jar, but I can’t be sure, either way, it was delicious. And the muffin – the perfect base! Nice and spongy, warm, and bit of a solid texture too, making it quite filling, which I found perfect (not too light so it left me still hungry afterwards).
Price was 200 baht for this dish, which I thought was really good considering the fresh Italian ingredients used to create it. You can pay this and more for a normal Eggs Benedict that uses bacon.
I can only speak for this one dish unfortunately, but the experience was really good and the rest of the menu looks impressive. A lot of things to choose from including western dishes and thai, a good 50/50 between the too I’d say. And the prices were very reasonable when you factor in location, quality of food, and overall ambiance of the place.
I think to best experience this place would be of the evening. I’ve seen this place lit up at night and it really stands out amongst a lot of the other restaurants in the evening. Nice dim garden lightening, with some water features and nice lawn area around the restaurant.
What were the main things you liked about the place?
Here’s what stood out for me in the first 5 minutes
- Quality food – in particular the poached eggs with pesto
- Outdoor garden and pond/water feature
- The view – being one the beach front
What are the prices like?
Very reasonable considering the quality ingredients and the location. I paid 200 baht for my meal.
Where are they located?
On the main beach road, about 50 meters from the Holiday Inn (heading west).
